Most modern-day relatives are descended from Jane Meriwether Lewis Anderson, sister of Meriwether Lewis, and Edmund Anderson, her husband. Beyond the identified Lewis descendants, many other people across the country could lay claim to being related to Gov. Lewis.
The closest known living relative of Gov. Lewis is Dr. William M. Anderson of Williamsburg, Va. Gov. Lewis’ next-closest living relative is Dr. Alden Scott Anderson of Staunton, Va. Both men are great-great-great nephews of Gov. Lewis.
Gov. Lewis was among four children of Capt. William Lewis and Lucy Meriwether Lewis Marks. The others were Jane Meriwether Lewis Anderson, Reuben Lewis and Lucinda Lewis (who died in infancy). With second husband Capt. John Marks, Mrs. Marks had two children: John Hastings Marks and Mary Garland Marks. Mrs. Marks married Capt. Marks in 1780, a year after Capt. Lewis died.
